| Gamebirds Royal Palm Turkeys: A heritage breed of turkey. Rare in some areas and very abundant in others. Not an aggressive breed but can be skittish. Wonderful broodies and moms, they will brood on anything, and defend it with their lives. The black and white variety is the most common, but there also are blue and white royals. Another colour they come in is Pure White, this is a Sport out of the normal black and whites birds and is not very common, chances of hatching a white royal chick are not very high. I only have heard of 2 breeders that in all of these years of raising these turkeys they have hatched only 1 or 2 pure white ones. One of which I have a acquired in 2007 as a chick, I bought it from a friend of mine as a day-old and lo and behold it turned into a pure white tom. Depending on how he does this breeding season white Royals may be available in the fall. Jersey Buff Turkeys I recently received a beautiful Trio of Jersey Buff Turkeys(thank you Kelly Simpson!! ). The buffs are a Rare type of heritage turkey, it was used to create the Red Bourbon Turkey who then became more popular, since an even colour was easier to maintain on the Reds then on the Buffs. The buff Variety almost went extinct but some dedicated breeders used red Bourbons to get Buff numbers back up. Breeders are still needed though. They are a heavier breed of turkey, very mellow and friendly with great mothering instincts. Pheasants: I currently have 1 male and 2 female Chinese Ringneck Pheasants. I hope to be able to raise lots of chicks in the coming breeding season. Bobwhite Quail A very commonly kept type of Quail. Often reared for hunting and dog training. A wonderful addition to any small bird aviary. Cortunix Quail This type of quail is very easy to raise and is often kept for egg production(they start laying at 6 weeks of age) or for meat. They tame down very easily and come in many colours. I currently have a few Tuxedos, Pied Normals and Pied Goldens. Silver Pheasants I recently acquired a beautiful pair of 2 yr old Silver Pheasants, never owned this type of pheasant before and must admit they are a very interesting bird to keep. A bit on the aggressive side, and very protective of everything that shares their enclosure. Both the male and the female will stalk me when I enter the enclosure to water and feed. Beautiful birds none the less, and a bit of attitude makes them even more amazing. Goldens Sadly my old yellow Golden male has passed away of old age in May. I wont be replacing him this year, next year maybe. So no Golden Pheasants for 2008. |
| No, this is not a new color, it is my oldest male after a bath in wood ashes, he looks like he was very thorough |
